The Newstead Arms

Once a month we transform our home into The Newstead Arms, so residents can feel like they’re at the pub! There are bitters and ales on offer, gin and tonics and wines, and a selection of bar snacks. Often we incorporate pub games, such as skittles and darts. For January’s pub afternoon, we decided to have a fundraiser to support The Alzheimer’s Society.

This is a charity close to all our hearts. We decided to host for family and friends a fun-filled pub quiz with prizes, one donated by Wye Valley Brewery. There were lots of tipples, including themed cocktails and pub snacks!

We had a wonderful afternoon and lots of laughs and we raised £161.77.

Helping hands for our activities.

JJ and Vanda are coming in to help with activities. Their ongoing support is invaluable and its lovely to hear them catching up with residents.

Residents made delicious sausage rolls with Vanda. Each was filled with something different alongside the sausage meat. For example, sage and onion stuffing, Branston pickle, fig and apple chutney and cranberry chutney!

Ahead of Valentines Day, some of our residents made beautiful flower arrangements with the help of Vanda and JJ. We also made lots of chocolate dipped fruit including strawberries, raspberries, grapes, dried apricots and dates and some marshmallows too. To be honest, a lot of the dipped goodies didn’t make it to the final plate!! Too tempting!

For Valentines Day itself, we started with our church service, followed by a romantic lunch for residents and their spouses. Then a chocolate tasting in the afternoon. A day full of love.

In other news…

Residents made bird feeders to go in our garden ready for The RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch. We take part every year, counting the birds and submitting our data to the RSPB. Everyone also enjoyed singing and reading poems about birds.

We have a new Tuck Shop Trolley! This is stacked with lots of yummy goodies and does the rounds each week. One of our residents loves helping out about our home, especially running the Tuck Shop Trolley.

We had a brilliant Burns Night celebration and have also celebrated lots of birthdays.
